Our natural & naturopathic medicine service offers support on a physical and emotional level and aims to assist the patient in taking greater responsibility for their health and wellbeing.

The foundation of the services offered lies in the philosophy that our healing power is from within. This means that the body has its own healing ability and with the support of the naturopathic approach, the body may be supported in recovering from illness, in sustaining a sense of wellbeing and the patient assisted to establish a healthy, supportive lifestyle and environment.

Whether we experience disease and illness, or good health and vitality, it is considered to be largely contributed to by an accumulation of daily choices.  When we feel able to make more loving choices, including those involving life style, our food and nutrition, the environment we choose around us, our emotional response to life, amongst many other things, the body can be supported in what it requires to complement the healing process.
In this sense we are able to take responsibility for providing the best possible chance for other medical or allied health treatment to do what it is able.

At UniMed Brisbane those practitioners offering a naturopathic approach, understand and respect the place of medicine and other allied health services. In that sense their services are suitable for every person from infants to the aged, and is considered complementary rather than an alternative to treatment offered through the medical system.

Because of this respectful and complementary approach, many practitioners enjoy close working relationships with other medical and allied practitioners and will often work in collaboration to provide the best support possible.

Nutritional and Orthomolecular medicine

Nutritional medicine is the science that simply defines and establishes the relationship between a person’s food, and the impact of nutritional factors on their levels of health and well-being or on any illness and disease.

The body requires six main things in order to function correctly: carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and water.
These all need to be consumed on a daily basis.
If one of these becomes low or deficient, a negative impact occurs on the body and illness or a general feeling of being unwell may result.

Orthomolecular medicine is considered a form of complementary and alternative medicine. It is aimed at maintaining health through nutritional supplementation and based on the assertion that there is an optimum nutritional environment in the body. It is considered that  diseases reflect deficiencies in this environment.

Treatment for disease, according to this view, calls for the "correcting of imbalances or deficiencies based on individual biochemistry" by use of substances natural to the body, such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, trace elements and fatty acids

The term "orthomolecular" was coined by Linus Pauling to mean "the right molecules in the right amounts" (ortho is Greek for "right"). Orthomolecular medicine ensures that treatment must be based on each patient's individual biochemistry.
