TOP TIPS from UniMed Brisbane admin, staff and practitioners
TIP 1: My number 1 Livingness tip that keeps me on top of what life throws at me would be to stay purposeful in everything I do. What this means for me is that behind everything I do I look for a bigger picture of how it affects others and whether it is good for everyone, not just self-serving for me. I also like to stay a bit playful and keep things fun and light. As a result of this I still love my work after 35 years.
TIP 2: There are many but one key one l’ve discovered after years of starting work very early is ensuring I leave space to do the things I need in the morning that set me up for the day - self-care things. If I don’t take the time to do what I need, I don’t feel prepared to start looking after everyone else (which is what my day consists of).
It sounds simple but it’s the most important thing to start out on the right foot. Getting a good, deep sleep is pretty important part of this too, but that’s sneaking in another one… wind down and get to bed early!
TIP 3: My tips (hehe … yep im sneaking in two as well) … is to
1. Embrace the word whoops … whoops has allowed me to embrace each moment of life as a learning opportunity … which means there are no mistakes or so called bad parts of life; just opportunities for learning, development and evolution.
2. Bring playfulness and cheekiness into my day … life can seem so serious at times; but by geez by jingo the difference it makes to be play-full, cheeky and giggle with yourself and with others is enormous.
TIP 4: Like many of us, I tend to be an over-achiever and a 'doer’ so for me it's crucial that I don’t push myself to work past 7.30-8pm at night – especially if I’m feeling more vital than usual and think I have the energy to do even more – that’s a sure sign I’ve become hyperactive and my nervous system’s engaged! Staying up answering emails or on social media keeps me wired, so when I try to sleep my head's busy and I’m too revved up. If I do, I inevitably wake up exhausted and suffer all the next day. Giving myself the space to wind-down properly before bed makes a huge difference to the quality of my sleep, how I feel the following day – and makes sure I’m able to do what I do with integrity rather than dragging myself around!
TIP 5: My number one livingness tip is – be it in the morning or the evening I like to take myself for a walk. When I walk I bringing a clear focus to my feet as I place them on the ground. This draws me out of my head and enables me to put any pressure or overwhelm I’m feeling in perspective.
TIP 6: My tip would be particularly preparing myself for the day: bed made, dishes done, exercise, shower and dress and ensure me and my home are in order before walking out the door – as that is what greets me upon returning or walking back through the door.
Something else essential for me is addressing things as they present or arise. Not letting things fester or be put off until later as that later seems to become lots of later’s that I never seem to catch up on, which thencauses all sorts of bother, anxiety and pressure.
TIP 7: For me life has to be about people and connecting with them, so my number one tip is to stay open with others, to not hold back my warmth and my willingness to engage, support, listen, share something or just to be there. This helps me to stay more steady, confident and connected during the day.
TIP 8: My livingness tip is walking with presence, feeling my body and letting go of thoughts, of planning for the day ahead. I just walk being fully present with me. I like to walk each morning as it sets me up for the day. If I can’t for some reason, I take the opportunity when I’m walking to the car, around the office, anywhere really. I find I can reconnect to myself via walking this way throughout the day if something has happened and I feel out of sorts.
TIP 9: My biggest tip would be to avoid foods that make me feel tired, bloated or anxious. For me that means specifically staying away from high sugar carbs and refined sugar. That supports me to stay more focused and energetic throughout the day, more even in my moods and l’d even say, more open to others (because I feel better in myself).
TIP 10: For me (due to shift work) it’s not about sleeping at a specific time, but regardless of what shift I’m working, making sure I dedicate sufficient time for resting my body. It’s about prioritising sleep and rest and not being lured into doing things/going places that I may want to do – if it will compromise my body due to sleep deprivation. I can hardly imagine what it would feel like to work all night, have 3 hours sleep, then try and go out and enjoy lunch or a movie feeling like a train wreck.
So to make that more concise – my top tip is about honouring what the body needs (in my case sleep) rather than overriding it and living life to what the social calendar dictates.
TIP 11: My number 1 Livingness Tip is certainly getting to bed by 9pm, sometimes 8.30pm. It gives me an opportunity to nurture myself as part of a my bedtime routine, allowing me to put aside the busyness of the day, then after a peaceful night's sleep, to wake up the next morning feeling restored.
TIP 12: My top tip is to connect with those around me, being open to connecting with them and knowing what’s going on for them. This is something that helps me stay grounded and present through the day, and that keeps me feeling really well.
